It sounds like I need to investigate later Oliveros – I’m only familiar with a handful of early-to-middle-period works, i.e. up to and including the Deep Listening album. Any recommendations, besides those discussed above?

Well, i can’t lay any claims to being an Oliveros aficianado; i’ve only tended to listen when she’s crossed my path, rather than seeking her out. Last year’s Water Above Sky Below Now, that she made with her partner Ione, was pretty enjoyable, though it’s very, very different from the kind of thing we were hearing at HCMF (much more lively and in the best sense ‘quirky’). i also really enjoyed the Four Meditations/Sound Geometries disc, also from last year – not quite enough to end up writing about it, but the first piece in particular is really outstanding, and closer to what i’ve been writing about (though still nowhere near as broad in focus and slow in movement). i would definitely recommend it, but if you’re after a similar experience to the pieces played at HCMF, i’m not sure it would give you that!
