Thanks for this, Simon. I’m sure it’s occurred to you, but there IS one important distinction on Bandcamp between “free” and “name your price” — “free” releases are not included on a purchaser’s collection page, and thus the whole social-influence angle baked into Bandcamp is defeated. Even if you designate zero for “name your price,” the release you’ve acquired will take its place in your collection, and will be reflected to your followers via those handy e-mail updates. That’s important, I think.
i don’t believe you’re correct, Steve – at least, not anymore. i know that distinction between free and ‘name your price’ used to be there but it does’t seem to be any longer, and i’ve not been able to find any information confirming either way on Bandcamp’s help pages. i’ve double-checked in my own collection and while there do seem to be ‘name your price = zero’ items further back, among the more recent items (i.e. downloaded in the last 12-18 months), it only contains albums i either paid for or had download codes for, no ‘name your price = zero’ items at all. Furthermore, i’ve just tried it out, downloading something on a ‘name your price = zero’ basis – and, sure enough, it’s not been added to my collection.
So as far as i can see, responding to ‘name your price’ with a zero amount doesn’t any longer add the album to your collection. i think that’s a shame.
Steve – having checked and digged further, i was right, it’s definitely not the case any longer. With ‘name your price’ releases you do need to pay something in order for it to be added to your collection.
I’ve been following Mike Carss (Altus) for some years now and I truly believe he is one of the best if not THE best ambient music composer today. Bandcamp offers a multitude of artists and composers in the ambient genre, be it dark, atmospheric, drone etc…, but in my 16k+ collection, Altus is the only artist whose discography is permanently in my player.
His latest offering, Winter Embrace (15th Anniversary Edition) is a pure masterpiece. The music is exquisite and the sonic research is perfection. I posted on Facebook that Winter Embrace 15th is the album of the year. I wish him a long and fruitful life, so he could bless us with more of his beautiful music.
