The acoustic/electronic ambiguity that you note was perhaps exploited most famously by Pauline Oliveros, in her 1989 Deep Listening collaboration with trombonist Stuart Dempster and vocalist Panaiotis, although the modal idiom employed there is obviously very different from the almost Ligetian one in evidence here.
