I may have to revisit Lyatoshynsky; initial impressions of his 3rd Symphony (the only one I can recall listening to previously) were definitely that there was something in there worth persisting with, even though I wasn’t exactly blown away.

I think Holmboe’s symphonies have come up in an email chat before; have you had a chance to listen to any of those? I’d definitely file under “if you like Tubin, then you’ll like…”, and would recommend starting with the “core four” (of a total of 13), nos.5-8. Of these, 5 and 8 are the most emotionally immediate, and would provide a good gateway drug to the more enigmatic 6 and 7. Obviously, if you’re sold on any of those four, you can then expand outwards…

Do revisit him, Chris – i’d never explored these symphonies until recently, and was surprised how compelling they all are.

Holmboe: not yet; i haven’t found a cheap complete set but i’d really like to explore them at some point…

You could always “cheat” – plenty of them are on YouTube, for example…

True, but i pretty much never do that; my listening just feels much more immersive when i have the physical release. #OldSchool

Of course, there used to be a time when one could rely on such things occasionally making an appearance in concert programmes and/or on the radio… #ThoseWereTheDaysMyFriend

Apparently the original finale of the 3rd symphony is on the Chandos disc conducted by Karabits.[https://www.classical-music.com/reviews/orchestral/lyatoshynsky-symphony-no-3-grazhyna/]

Thanks for this! i haven’t had a chance to explore the Karabits recording yet – it’ll be very interesting to compare. Thanks again!
