In reality, I think the most authentic music shone through in the light-music 4th movement. Cloying references to Das Lied von der Erde at the end didn’t quite convince me. Give me this flawed Symphony any day over the bombast of MacMillan’s 4th Symphony though.
i don’t read reviews elsewhere, so i wasn’t aware others had deemed the piece praise-worthy. It’s hard to fathom what they found to be positive aspects of it. But then, i suspect my views are often out of alignment with theirs…
