i’m really excited to share a new instalment in my occasional series The Dialogues. This time my guest is German composer and conductor Enno Poppe, whose utterly unique music has been mind- and ear-boggling me for many, many years. We got together last summer, while i was spending a long weekend in Berlin, and i want to thank Enno for his time and hospitality.
Poppe doesn’t have a website, so information about his work is primarily available from his publisher, Ricordi. You can find all my previous writing about his music here.
Of all the people i’ve spoken with in these Dialogues, none of them has been so well-represented by recordings. There are currently no fewer than 10 portrait discs devoted to his music, most of them on the Wergo label, and his works appear on a plethora of compilation albums. The majority of the excerpts that i’ve featured in our Dialogue come from these releases, but i’ve also included a few off-air recordings of pieces not yet available.
